Fight prep
Your first spar
What it is for, what it is not for, and how not to embarrass yourself.
3 min read
The short version
- It's practice, not a fight. Your partner's job is to make you better.
- Breathe, jab, move. One clean shot beats a wild flurry.
- Watch the chest, not the hands. Punches come from there.
It is not a fight
Sparring is practice with a live opponent. The person opposite you is a training partner, not a threat, and their job is to make you better. Yours is the same.
Anyone who treats a first spar as a chance to hurt a beginner is telling you something about themselves. Say so to the coach.
What to actually do
- Breathe. Almost everyone holds their breath and is exhausted in ninety seconds.
- Jab and move. One clean jab beats a wild flurry that leaves you open.
- Keep your eyes open and look at the chest, not the hands. Punches come from there.
- Hands back to the chin every time. Every time.
Afterwards
You will remember almost none of it, and you will have done better than you think. Ask your partner what they saw — it is the most useful feedback you will get all month.
